Sensational BEY.......
Many years ago I
moved to Upstate, NY against my better judgment, no offense to Upstate New
Yorkers, but my heart was left in Colorado. One afternoon while reading
my Arabian Horse World I found an ad for Sensational BEY who lived now close
by in NY. I hurried to the phone and called the number in the ad to see
if I could come and see him in person. The phone was quickly answered by
a I could tell a charming young man, "Ennistymon Farm, may I help
you?" I began trying to explain who I was and that I had just
recently moved near by and would love to speak to Mr. Jim Maroney. The
young man politely explained that Mr. Maroney was not home at the time but he
would gladly take a message. "My name is Patty Ross" left my
number and we hung up.
In s short time
a call came in from Mr. Maroney, asking for Toddy Ross, that was the beginning
of my relationship with Mr. Maroney, Sensational BEY, and my new nick name,
Toddy.
This story of Sensational BEY could become a novel so easily, but I will try to not take up all of your time for the next week. Sensational BEY was by far one of the most charismatic horses I have ever seen. Yet he was very kind and gentle. His famous routine and game we played was when he was loose in the indoor while I stood motionless in the center. He would puff up and trot like a park horses, snorting and blowing like a wild stallion in the desert. His mane flowing and that straight rod of a tail flagged high in the air. On lookers would stand with their eyes wide and as he would trot towards me at a high rate of speed, with fire in his eyes he would come fast and slam on the brakes right at my face stopping only inches away and snort. You could hear the people watching gasp as they were sure he was going to come right over the top of me, this wild and fiery stallion. Instead he would put his head down and have me straighten his forelock or kiss his nose. What a showman, and he would do it time and time again. When Jim and I first met, people would believe that we must have been friends for years, it was that instant. My youngest son was so in love with BEY that to this day 20 some years later, ask him who is favorite horse in the world is, and his answer without hesitation is Sensational BEY. I was blessed to watch BEY mature right before my eyes into the most magnificent stallion. He had the kindest big eyes, and the softest expression, while being masculine and powerful all the time. No matter the weather, time of day, whether he had been worked, you could put him out for people and on with the show! He loved to show off, and do his thing like no other horse ever could. Sensational BEY was not only beautiful and talented, he was the reason I and my sons found my second family, Mr. Jim Maroney and Mr. Bill Cook. Now days even my son's don't call them that anymore. Just Bill and Jim. Going to the Ennistymon farm will always be a favorite destination, a retreat, a place to go to be renewed and centered. The farm is almost a fairy tale setting. I would go as often over the years to see Bill and Jim and of course my Sensational BEY.
Without Sensational BEY my life would not be as complete as it is
today. The combination of Jim and Bill, the horses and the other
wild creatures there are what makes the setting so relaxing. Sensational
BEY had a dream life and home there. He spent his life loved and cared
for by the best, and will be loved and missed forever. Sensational BEY
changed my life for the better more then any one defining moment. He
will always be our favorite horse and the greatest ambassador for the Arabian
Horse, and for my family.
We miss him
everyday.
